Rugby Town held its 14th annual soccer festival at Kilsby Lane last weekend, with the players and parents enjoying warm sunshine on the Saturday and a cold blowing wind on the Sunday. Teams from Coventry, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and even as far away as Bletchley and Redditch participated in over 420 ten-minute games, with over 1360 players taking part. Scouts again from Manchester Utd, West Brom, Coventry and Leicester were in attendance hopefully trying to identify stars of the future.
U10s semi-finals saw Rugby Town and Cov Jag playing each other, with Town winning 1-0. The second semi-final saw Gregory Celtic beat a defiant Admirals team 6-5 on penalties. And Celtics’ penalty prowess earned them the winners’ medals by beating Rugby Town 7 – 6 after the football could not separate them.
U11s semi-finals were played out with Southam A beating locals Hillmorton 2-1 and Southam B being beaten 1-0 by hosts Rugby Town. And Rugby Town triumphed in the final over the Southam A team by a solitary goal.
Thurlaston Magpies, Hinckley, Admirals and Rugby Town secured their places in the U12s semi-finals with Hinckley and Town progressing through to the final. However, Town could not emulate their U11 counterparts and lost 1-0 to Hinckley.
The U13s finals were contested by FC Futsal from Northampton against Warwick Development, and Bugbrooke against Pilkington. Futsal pulled off an excellent 1-0 result against Warwick who had been unbeaten throughout the tournament, and Pilkington beat Bugbrooke 3-0. However, Futsal could not repeat the feat and lost 3-0 to Pilkington in the final.
U14s saw two teams from Stoneygate Lions fight it out against two teams from Rugby Town. And it was not Town’s day in this age group with both teams losing 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. Therefore the final was an all Stoneygate affair with the A team triumphing over the B team.
Sunday saw football for the U7s, U8s and U9s. The sevens and eights were non-competitive with no finals element being played. However the group games proved extremely popular and were still entertaining and enjoyed by all participants who each received a medal and a certificate.
The Under 9s semi-finals were keenly contested by Brinklow and Oadby Owls, and Leamington Hibs taking on the long distance travellers Bletchley. Oadby Owls succumbed by two goals to Brinklow and Leamington Hibs scored a 3-1 victory against Bletchley. The final was very competitive with Leamington Hibs taking the title with a 1-0 victory over Brinklow.
Sunday afternoon also saw 15 Micros teams playing football, which allowed these young children to sample organised football for the first time. Again, this proved very popular with them, and their parents and coaches. A great time was had by all.
The club would like to thank Nationwide Windows for sponsoring the Festival.
Many thanks to all the staff and stewards and of course the 38 referees who worked extremely hard over the two days, enabling the event to run without a hitch.
A credit to the Club all round.
